8 held for unfair means in teacher recruitment test  
KURIGRAM : Police arrested eight examinees from five centres in Sadar and Ulipur upazilas for adopting unfair means in the primary teacher recruitment test on Friday. The arrestees were identified as Habiba Sultana, daughter of Haider Ali of Sabuj Para, Warinnahar, daughter of Wahed Ali of Hospital para, Mousumi Begum, daughter of Makbul Hossain of Nazira Munshi Para, Abdur Rahim Rasel, son of Fikir Uddin Mujib of Najira Kamar Para, Al Faruk and Shibli Noman, sons of Abdul Jalil of Kurigram municipality area, Fatema Begum, daughter of Badiuzzaman of Chakirposhar in Rajarhat upazila, and Shahnaj Khatun, daughter of Joynal Abedin of Bohorer Bhita in Chilmari upazila. Sultana Parvin, Deputy Commissioner of the district, said the eight examinees were arrested for using electronic devices during the test, re[ports UNB.
Habiganj journo tortured by cops
HABIGANJ: Police tortured a local journalist in custody after his arrest on charge of possessing drugs.Police arrested Sirajul Islam Jibon, district assistant correspondent of Channel S, early Friday from his residence at Gorurbazar of the district town, said his fellow colleagues. Later, they tortured him in custody, leaving him injured. Police took him to hospital in the morning citing that he was injured in a mass beating. Local journalists claimed that police implicated Jibon in a false case.They also blocked road in front of the Sadar Police Station in the town protesting the torture. Earlier, the journalists held a meeting at the local press club around 2pm when they demanded immediate release of Jibon. They also threatened to announce a tougher movement on Saturday if their demand is not met, reports UNB.
River bank protection work begins in Fulchhari upazila
GAIBANDHA: The much awaited river bank protection work along the Jamuna River from Baguria to Gano Kabor under Fulchhari upazila in the district began on Friday. Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) is implementing the work at a cost of TK 295.50 crore while Dockyard and Engineering Works Ltd of Bangladesh Navy will construct the development work at four points of the upazila, office sources said. The aim of the work is to protect the vulnerable areas of the upazila from the devastating erosion side by side with saving the homesteads and the arable land, sources said. Deputy speaker of the Jatiya Sangshad and local lawmaker Advocate Fazle Rabbi Miah inaugurated the development work at Gano Kabor, Singria, Balashighat and Baguria points of the upazila through unveiling the plaques as the chief guest. Commodore of Bangladesh Navy Sheikh Arif Mohammad, deputy commissioner Gautam Chandra Pal, executive engineer of BWDB Mahbubur Rahman, upazila chairman Habibur Rahman, UNO Abdul Halim Tolstoy and local union parishad chairmen, public representatives, and political leaders including journalists were present on the occasion. The people from all walks of life of the upazila expressed their gratefulness to the government and deep satisfaction for starting the development work at four points along the right bank of the river under the upazila, reports BSS.
18 abducted fishermen rescued in Sundarbans  
BAGERHAT: Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard on Friday rescued 18 abducted fishermen, including a woman,from Nalian area of the Sundarbans under Koyra upazila of Khulna. Four teams of coastguards of Mongla West Zone launched drivesin the area on information that the fishermen were abducted, said its Operation Officer Lt Abdullah Al Mahmud. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the bandits fled leaving the victims behind, he said, adding that they rescued them along with 11 trawlers. The gang abducted the fishermen in the morning while they were fishing in the area, Mahmud added, reports UNB.
