Six rural women get sewing machines
RAJSHAHI: Some six rural women were given sewing machines here with the main thrust of making them income-generators for their self-reliance. The Hunger Project Bangladesh (THPB) donated the machines to Rozina Khatun, Shahina Khatun, Shima Begum, Shanker Rani Karmaker, Khuki Urao and Maloti Rani in association with Women and Children Affairs Department aims at improving their living and livelihood condition. They received the machines in a simple ceremony at Mohanpur Upazila Parishad Hall Room yesterday. Earlier, they were also imparted necessary training on sewing. Upazila Parishad Chairman Prof Abdus Samad, Union Parishad Chairmen Al Amin Biswash, Hasanuzzaman Madhu, Mostofa Shah Chowdhury and Abul Kalam Azad and THPB Area Coordinator Subrata Kumar Paul were present on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, the public representatives urged the authorities concerned to extend more such cooperation to bring many other poor and distressed women under income-generating activities for their economic emancipation. Prof Abdus Samad said the government has adopted multidimensional programmes for uplifting the womenfolk. The participants should seize every opportunity offered by the government. He said substantial improvement of women entrepreneurship could play a vital role in women empowerment and that could be effective means of boosting their income generating activities, reports BSS.
Miscreants torch house in Sylhet, 4 burnt

At least four people sustained burn injures as some miscreants torched a house by pouring petrol at Nayabasti village of Goinghat in Jaflong upazila of Sylhet early Friday. The injured are Arfan Mia, 45, son of Altaf Ali of Nayabasti village, Motiur Rahman, 30, son of Kazim Uddin, Sujon, 28, son of Shamsul Haque, Saleh Ahmed, 25, son of Abdul Malik. The victims were admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Quoting the locals, Officer-in-Charge of Goinghat Police Station Delwar Hossain said a gang of miscreants poured petrol and set fire to the house at dead of night while they were in deep sleep, keeping the window of the house open due to hot weather.Local people rushed to the spot after they screamed for help. But the miscreants managed to escape. Of the injured, one is in critical condition, he added.
Worker killed in Bahubal road accident
A hotel worker was killed as a truck ran over him in College gate area on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway under Bahubal upazila of the district on Thursday morning. The deceased was identified as Shamsul Islam, 30, son of Abdul Latif, a resident of Shibpasa village of the upazila.Police said the accident occurred when a speedy truck ran over Shamsul in the area while he was crossing the road. He died on the spot.
Nor’wester damages Boro paddy in Monirampur

Target to produce 87thousand tones of Boro paddy may be hampered as the Nor’wester has damaged Boro paddy recently , sources of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said here. Farmers cultivated additional 150 hectares of land . On the other hand Nor’wester with heavy rain occurred recently was shattered their hope . According to a reliable source of the DAE from the beginning of the season the weather was favourable and they predicts bumper production. Moreover , the cultivators collected HYV variety of seed and good quality of fertilizer in time, S Not only that cultivators were inspired of good market price of rice. Some cultivators of different areas informed this correspondent, ripe paddy has already been damaged by rain and storm that was occurred several times recently.
