Expert talks on Cyprus a success: UN

The United Nations said two days of expert-level talks on the possible reunification of Cyprus had ended Thursday, describing them as a success but without disclosing any details.
The UN-backed negotiations in the alpine resort town of Mont Pelerin included Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot representatives as well as officials from Ankara, Athens and former colonial power Britain.

US helping India track Chinese submarines

India and the United States are working together to track Chinese submarines in the Arabian Sea zone, India’s Business Standard newspaper said on Thursday.
India does not approve of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) that will service the Gwadar port, which sits strategically between the Arabian Sea and the Persian Gulf.

Scotland will vote for
independence

Scotland will vote to become independent within two years due to the hardline position being taken by British Prime Minister Theresa May over Brexit, former Scottish first minister Alex Salmond said on Friday.
Scotland rejected independence in 2014 by 55 to 45 percent, but current Scottish leader Nicola Sturgeon has said Scots are now more likely to want independence after they voted emphatically last June to remain in the EU while the United Kingdom as a whole voted to leave.

Shanghai appoints former judge as new mayor

China’s largest city Shanghai has named a former judge as mayor, one of the most senior provincial positions in the country, the local government announced on Friday.
Ying Yong, 59, had previously run the city’s top court and the ruling Communist Party’s local organization department, according to the Shanghai government’s post on its microblog.
