National Professor MR Khan passed away due to old age complications on Saturday at the age of 88.
The country’s pioneer paediatric surgeon Professor Khan breathed his last at 4:25pm at Central Hospital in the capital.
He was also suffering from cardiac complications for past few months and was admitted to the intensive care unit of the hospital, said Fariduddin Faruqi, Assistant Director of Central Hospital.
His first Namaj-e-Janaza will be held at 10:00am today (Sunday) at Central Hospital. The second namaz-e-janaza would be held at Shishu Shasthya Foundation Hospital at Mirpur. He will be buried at his family graveyard in Rasulpur of Satkhira Sadar.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed their profound shock at the death of Professor MR Khan. They recalled the great contribution of the child specialist and said the death of Dr Khan would cost high in the specialised field.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim also expressed deep shock at the death of Dr Khan.
Born on August 1, 1928 in Satkhira, MR Khan passed MBBS from Calcutta Medical College in 1952. He subsequently completed DCH, MRCP, FCPS, FRCP from London (1957), Edinburgh (1962), Bangladesh (1974) and Edinburgh (1978).
Khan has served as physician and teacher in the field of child health for a half century in Bangladesh and was regarded as father of Paediatrics in Bangladesh.
He served as a professor in different medical colleges in Bangladesh such as Dhaka Medical College and Rajshahi Medical College.
He has been appointed as National Professor since 2011.
He was awarded ‘Ekushey Padak’ for his contributions in child health and medicine on March 24 this year.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also awarded Bangladesh’s highest civilian honour, the Swadhinata Padak or Independence Award to Khan.
In his long career, Khan founded several organisations and national institutions. Among those are the Child Health Foundation Bangladesh, Institute of Child Health and Hospital at Mirpur, Dhaka and Children’s Hospitals at Satkhira and Jessore.
He has written a number of books including Practice of Paediatrics Medicine, An Essential Aid on Paediatrics Medicine, and Essence of Paediatrics.
