National Mourning Day observed in the port city as elsewhere in the district marking the 44th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family member yesterday .
People from all strata of life pay rich tributes to Bangabandhu, architect of the independent Bangladesh, who along with his family members were brutally assassinated on this fateful night of August 15, 1975.
Apart from the Chattogram city, north and south district units of Awami League (AL) and their front organisations, scores of socio-cultural and literary organisations, trade unions, district administration, all educational institutions and professional bodies have chalked out elaborate programmes to mark the day, reports party spokesmen..
The nation, however, started observing the month of mourning from August 1, recalling the most brutal killing in its history and renewing the pledge to safeguard perpetually the country’s independence and sovereignty. Leaders and workers of AL and its front organisations and professional bodies will wear black badges throughout the day.
The day’s programmes include hoisting of the national and black flags at half-mast atop all party offices, placing wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu, Quran khwani, Milad Mahfil, discussion meetings, poetry recitation, essay and quiz competitions on life and activities of Bangabandhu, screening of films, playing of the historic March 7 speeches of Bangabandhu in 41 wards of the City Corporation, blood donation and distribution of foods among the destitute people.
The programmes of Chattogram District Administration’ include Milad Mahfil, Khatme Quran, special prayers at mosques and discussions on the life and works of Bangabandhu, essay competition and poetry recitation will be held at Shisu Academy and Shilpakala Academy respectively .
Chattogram City Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin said that charismatic leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had liberated the country to establish the rights of the Bengali nation. The honor of this nation, the realization of dignity was the main goal of Bangabandhu.
He was addressing as chief guest at the orphan gathering , Khatme Qur’an, Milad Mahfil, special prayers and discussion held at the Chittagong City Corporation’s (CCC) KB Abdu Satter Auditorium on Thursday
Panel Mayor Chowdhury Hasan Mahmood Hasani, Councilor Abida Azad, Chief Executive Officer of CCC Shamsuddoha were present., Chief Engineer Lt. Colonel Mohiuddin Ahmed were present.
He said those who were defeated in the liberation war started the plot. After independence of the country, on the fateful night of August 15, Bangabandhu was brutally assassinated with other family members .
At that time, Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, two daughters of Bangabandhu, were abroad. After that, Sheikh Hasina struggled to bring the country to its present state.
She said Bangabandhu was killed to prevent the dream of establishing a gold Bangladesh. The people who killed Bangabandhu are identified groups.
The mayor said the countrymen are getting the benefits of independence under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Bangabandhu. It is only possible to understand the social position of the people before independence, what was the financial situation, and what has happened now.
She said Bangabandhu had been jailed for nearly five years. So many sacrifices are rare instances in the history of the world.
The Mayor said CCC has taken a month-long program to honor the nation’s father.
Earlier this morning, Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin paid homage to the portrait of Bangabandhu in the city corporation premises. Councilors, officials of CCC were present during the programme.

In the morning national flags were kept half mast and offering fateha, Engineer Kaiz Ahmed Mojumder ,Managing Director of the company along other officers and Officers’ Associations leaders paid homage to the portrait of Bangabandhu in the office premises. Managing Director remember the fateful night of August 15,in 1975,16 other members of Banganandhu ‘s family and remember the role of energy sector for his outstanding contribution.
