Muhith expects 8 lakh more people to pay tax in next two years

Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Sunday expected that eight lakh more people to be included in the tax payers list while the current figure is 12 lakh.
“We are working enroll three lakh more taxpayers this year . . . it is not difficult enlist 20 lakh taxpayers by two years,” he told a discussion staged by Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) while it was also joined by Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu and chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on finance ministry Dr M Abdur Razzak, among others.
The minister said the target of enlisting 20 lakh taxpayers was part of a revenue generation campaign to help implement the government’s various development programmes.
BIDS Research Director Dr Binayak Sen delivered the key note speech at the discussion titled “Role of budget and other policy framework in removing inequality and poverty” while former foreign minister and chairperson of parliamentary standing committee on the foreign ministry Dr Dipu Moni presided over the function.
Muhith termed as “very high” the cost of remittance sending from abroad saying the figure should not exceed three percent in any way and added “the remittance collection process should be reformed to encourage Bangladeshis abroad to send more remittance”. Terming the social safety of the country as very good, the minister said about 2.2 percent of the country’s domestic product is allocating for the social safety.
