The incidents of mugging and looting have been increasing across the country, including the capital ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
At least 350 active members of 25-organised mugging gangs are active in the capital, Intelligence sources said.
Falling victim to gangsters, a good number of people, mostly bkash agents, are loosing their money, gold ornaments, mobile phone sets and other valuables, they said.
In Jessore, police arrested at least five muggers from different parts of the Sadar upazila on Thursday night. They have been identified as Shahidul Islam Gazi, his brother Monir Gazi, Abul Kalam and Tara Mia and Islam, said Ali Akbar, Sub-Inspector of Kotwali Model Police Station.
In Barisal, a gang of youths have snatched Tk 25,000 from an accountant of Barisal City College on Tuesday, said Shakhawat Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali police station.
In capital, miscreants shot a small businessman and snatched away Tk five lakh from him in Shyampur area on September 6. The victim was identified as Kamaruzzaman Suman.
Earlier, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive arrested three alleged robbers from
Mirpur area on Tuesday night in connection with snatching goods from Shahjalal International Airport area after beating a customs officials. On August 10, a gang of muggers looted goods worth Tk one crore from cargo village of the airport after beating customs officials.
In the meantime, muggers snatched away Tk one lakh by shooting a bkash agent in city’s Lalbagh area on Monday morning. The victim was identified as Hasan Billah.
An alleged mugger has been killed in police firing while fleeing after snatching money from a pedestrian in Tikatuli. The deceased was identified as Akash Ferdous, 30, of Dakkhin Keraniganj, said Tapan Chandra Saha, OC of Wari Police Station.
In Manikganj, muggers shot a bkash agent and snatched Tk 3 lakh from him in Gilanda Bazar of sadar upazila of the district on August 13, said Aminur Rahman, OC of Manikganj Sadar Thana.
In Chittagong, muggers have shot three persons, including a petrol pump businessman, snatched Tk nearly one crore from in Mirsarai upazila in the district on August 30.
Meanwhile, muggers snatched Tk 10.85 lakh from a tiles shop employee in city’s Amtali area on August 17, said Inspector (Investigation) Nizam Uddin.
