UNB, Dhaka :
BNP senior leader Moudud Ahmed on Saturday said their party must take harsher programmes to ensure the release of their Chairperson Khaleda Zia and force the government to hold the next polls under a non-party government.
“It’s not possible to have Khaleda Zia freed from jail with soft and peaceful programmes. So, we must gradually take harsher programmes,” he said.
Speaking at an iftar-cum-discussion programme, the BNP leader also said their peaceful
movement will turn into a decisive one in due time to force the government to come to a negotiation table, and hold the next election under a non-party neutral government.
Rajshahi University Nationalist ex-Students Association (Runesa) arranged the programme at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.
Moudud, a BNP standing committee member, said many people ridicule their party leaders saying there will be no use of taking soft and peaceful programmes. “They (people) are right. But we need to wait for the right time. When the time will come, we’ll surely work out proper and harder programmes to realise our demands.”
He said their party now has three-point agenda-freeing Khaleda from jail, expanding the 20-party alliance involving more democratic parties and people with it and intensifying the movement with tougher programmes.
The BNP leader said they are making their best efforts and will continue to do so in the future to release Khaleda from jail through a legal battle. “But, our lower judiciary is now completely under government control.”
“Though it may take time, Khaleda Zia must return to us from jail. The government will try to prolong her stay in jail by resorting to various tricks and controlling the lower court,” he observed. Moudud alleged that the lower court judges now cannot work independently due to political influence and undue pressure by the executive branch.
