GOLD smuggling is increasingly haunting Bangladesh Customs Authority as it continues unchecked over the years. The New Nation in a report on Tuesday said, gold smuggling through the country’s different airports, land ports, railway stations and frontier areas has become an unending challenge for the Customs as seizures of the contraband bullion is now a daily affair. It is widely believed that the quantity of gold seized by the Customs officials is only a very small fraction of the bullion being brought into the country. If it is true, then the gold confiscated is just like a tip of the iceberg. It is to be noted that, as per disclosure of concerned sources, the law enforcing agencies including customs, detective Branch of Police, BGB and GRP men seized nearly 4,491 kilograms of gold bars and jewellery in the last four years. In recent times frequent seizures of smuggled gold proves that gold smugglers are busy with their illegal operation in full swing with organized support network at every place.

Smuggling is a lucrative act to make easy money in most countries throughout the world. But this illegal activity creates serious harms to national economy as the government loses its revenue and legal authority on financial matters face serious challenge. There are Customs Department in every country to ensure entrance and exit of goods in a legal way. But unfortunately, in Bangladesh the activities of Customs staffs are not transparent enough to gain public confidence. Of course there are other agencies to look after financial legalities and to check violation of the rules in financial matter, specially in matters like smuggling. Gold smuggling is increasing day by day to put bigger threat for our national economy. Moreover smuggling is related with other crimes like unlawful syndicates of criminals hangs and terrorist outfits.

It is apprehended that dozens of syndicates are involved in gold smuggling in connivance with aircraft and airport staff and other people in the airport. It cannot be denied that there are lots of crack down – known and out of notice in the security apparatus in the airports to keep the watch on smuggling. Thus the gold smuggling with the combined channel of terrorism and organised criminal groups is increasingly threatening the country. It is for the greater interest of the nation the authorities should do more to prevent the smuggling to bring it down to tolerable level, if not to zero at all. Improvement of skill any human quality is a must for success in this job.
