More programmes on climate change mitigation stressed

Stressing the need for undertaking more programmes on climate change mitigation and disaster management, planning minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said development partners and climate experts should find out a way so that climate change impact and disaster could be faced successfully.
“Sustainable development largely depends on facing climate change impact and disaster . . . more climate change related projects should be taken and development partners should extend their support to this end,” the planning minister said this on Wednesday while inaugurating a workshop in the city.
General economics division of the planning ministry organised the workshop styled “Poverty Environment, Disaster and Climate Change Inclusive Development Project Design”. Member of the division Dr Shamsul Alam presided over it while disaster management and relief ministry secretary Mejbaul Alam, additional secretary Abdul Quayum, planning division secretary Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam and UNDP’s deputy country director Nick Beresford, among others, addressed.
The planning minister said Bangladesh suffers an annual loss of Tk 22,000- Tk23,000 crore due to natural disaster. He said people will have to be aware about the climate change and its impact so that they could face the situation successfully.
Mejbaul Alam said Bangladesh suffered a loss worth Tk 45,000 crore due to disaster in 2000-2011 and marginal people had to suffer extremely.
