At present, Mosharaf said, at least 80 per cent water is collected from underground water sources while only the 20 per cent water from surface water sources.
He said the government has already taken a Taka 300 crore project across the country for digging 3,000 ponds for providing surface water to the people by reducing dependency on underground water.
Shahjahan Khan said the committee, in line with the prime minister’s directive, would bring normalcy in the water flow of the Karnaphuli River and the rivers in and around Dhaka by making a suitable and effective master plan.
The second meeting of the high-powered committee will be held on March 2.
The meeting also decided to involve mayors of Gazipur City Corporation and Naryanganj City Corporation and mayors and councilors of municipalities around the river banks to make the master plan a success.
