Massive relief activities for flood-affected people

The government has been conducting massive relief activities for the flood-affected people to mitigate their sufferings in seven northern districts along the Brahmaputra basin, official sources said.
Under the programme, the government has allocated 3,700 tonnes of rice and Taka 71.50 lakh till Tuesday for distribution among flood affected people of Rangpur, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra and Sirajganj districts.
The district administrations have allocated 2,532.40 tonnes of rice and Taka 41.40 lakh till yesterday and upazila administrations in association with local public representatives have been distributing those among the flood-and erosion-hit people.
The seven district administrations still have reserves of 1,167.60 tonnes of rice and Taka 30.10 lakh for distribution if necessary any time.
According to official sources, 10.89 lakh people of 2.78 lakh families have been affected by current flood in these riverside districts where the flood situation continues improving.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer (DRRO) of Rangpur Abdus Salam said the government has allocated 250 tonnes of rice and Taka 5 lakh, and of them, 72 tonnes of rice and Taka 2.765 lakh have so far been distributed among the flood-affected people.
A total of 12,148 people of 3,037 families have been affected by flood in the district where the flood situation has already improved bringing normalcy in the affected areas, he added.
In Nilphamari, 20,310 people of 4,062 families have been affected by flood in two upazilas and the government has allocated 300 tonnes of rice and Taka 3 lakh.
Of them, 81.24 tonnes of rice and Taka 70,000 in cash have so far been distributed among the flood-affected people of Nilphamari where the flood situation has improved and most of the displaced people returned homes.
The government has allocated 300 tonnes of rice and Taka 11 lakh for Lalmonirhat where 46,327 people of 11,037 have been affected by the current flood in five upazilas.
The district administration has allocated 264.50 tonnes of rice and Taka 5.42 lakh and those are being distributed among the affected people of Lalmonirhat.
In Kurigram, 2.40 lakh people of 54,757 families have been affected by flood in all nine upazilas and the situation has been continuously improving during the past few days.
The government has allocated 950 tonnes of rice and Taka 12 lakh, the district administration has so far allocated 857.66 tonnes of rice and Taka 6.23 lakh and those are being distributed among the affected people in Kurigram.
In Gaibandha, 1.42 lakh people of 45,290 families have been affected by flood in the district where the overall flood situation has been improving continuously.
The government has allocated 600 tonnes of rice and Taka 14 lakh and the district administration has so far allocated 422 tonnes rice and Taka 10.53 lakh for distribution among the flood-hit people of Gaibandha.
In Bogra, 3.63 lakh people of 89,570 families of three upazilas have been affected and the government has allocated 550 tonnes of rice and Taka 12 lakh for the affected people.
Of them, the district administration has so far allocated 335 tonnes rice and Taka 6.75 lakh and those are being distributed among the flood-hit people of Bogra.
DRRO of Sirajganj Zakiur Rahim told BSS that the government has allocated 750 tonnes of rice and Taka 14.50 lakh for the district where some 2.50 lakh people of 65,000 families have been affected by flood.
The district administration has so far allocated 500 tonnes of rice and Taka 9 lakh till Tuesday and those are being distributed among the affected people in five upazilas, he added.
