Marine workers’ strike hits Port activities

Workers of marine cargo vessels under banner of Bangladesh Marine Workers Action Parishad enforced indefinite strike in Chittagong demanding implementation of 4-points demands including govt declared wage from midnight of Monday .
Due to marine workers strike, all types of discharging cargos from outer berth of the Chittagong port remained stranded. Joint convenor of the Parishad Md. Bashir to the New Nation that non-implementation of the govt declared wage board scale by the marine vessels, the strike is launched and this strike will continue until the demands are fulfilled. The other demands are refixing of the compensations to the accident affected workers, extortions in river way to stop and steps to keep navigability of port channel, sources said.
 Sources said the loading, unloading outer berths remain stopped but the work of oil tanker workers is continued .
Port transporters call off strike at mayor’s assurance: Owners and workers of prime movers and trailers, the vehicles used in transporting containers and other heavy goods from Chittagong Port, withdrew their indefinite work stoppage yesterday hours after they went on to press home their seven-point demand.
The withdrawal came following a meeting with Chittagong City Corporation mayor who assured them of looking into their demands, said Chattagram Prime Mover Trailer Malik-Sramik Oikya Parishad member secretary Abu Bakkar Siddiq.
The demands include reduction of Chittagong City Corporation’s tax from Tk 10,000 to Tk 500, a terminal for them in the port area, bringing the prime movers and trailers under a single registration number of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, a stop to suing them under 151 section, and co-ordination among different agencies in changing and implementing different motor vehicles and traffic related rules and acts.
