Erosion of Sugandha River in Babuganj upazila of Barishal has turned serious in recent days that it washed away many establishments including a high school of the upazila.
Houses of more than 10 dwellers, vast areas of farmland and major parts of the Side Mosharraf-Rashida Academy, a high school, have eroded away in to the river within last two days.
Selim Reja, headmaster of the school said, the school building was established in 2003 on 1.5 acre land.
`We have 276 students and where we will they go at the end of the academic season? The Eid vacation still continued and school would be opened and study would be hampered seriously due to this erosion.
‘If we have not received proper support we have to study under the open sky, headmaster added.
“We have requested the UNO and Upazila Chairman and also Social Welfare Minister to send emergency relief materials as soon as possible, the head master added.
Since the beginning of the rainy season, the erosion turned serious. Mahishadi Govt. Primary School, adjacent of the erosion affected area now under severe threat of erosion, Abdur Rashid Munshi, local of the area said.
Within last 48 hours the erosion eroded the school building and already cracks developed the wall and major portion went in to the river, locals said.
Not only high school and huge farmland also eroded away in to the river.
After visiting the erosion affected areas it was found that not only school building, the Birsreshtho Mohiuddin Jahangir Bridge on Barishal-Dhaka highway, even Barishal Airport also now under threat of serious river erosion and major portion of the erosion protection embankment already eroded, the locals and officials.
Abu Syed, executive engineer of water development board (WDB) in Barishal, said, the bridge area was under care of Roads and Highways Department (RHD).So we have submitted estimate to RH Department to prepare project to protect bridge, school and adjunct area from river erosion six month ago.
Khandokar Golam Mostafa, Executive Engineer of RHD, after visiting the erosion area said a project of Tk. 230 core has been prepared to protect this erosion area and bridge soon.
