Yesterday was the sixth death anniversary of the iconic hero of Dhaka’s film industry Manna. He breathed his last this day in 2008 after a heart attack at the United Hospital in Dhaka. He was only 48.
Memories of this hero were recalled yesterday in the capital, his hometown Tangail and other places at home and abroad by his fans, friends and family members.
Born in 1964 in Tangail, SM Aslam Talukder, popularly known as hero Manna, ventured into the world of film industry with actress Champa. He debuted in the industry through Kashem Malar Prem in 1984 after he was discovered through a talent search programme by the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC). From then on, he had no looking back.
Manna acted in more than 300 films in lead roles, most of which did profitable business in an era when the Dhaka-based film industry was facing a drought.
Some of his blockbuster movies were: Danga, Deshpremik, Loottoraj, Ammajaan, Abbajaan, Beer Soinik, Moner Sathey Juddho, Dui Bondhu Ek Swami and Bortoman, among others. Manna used to act around in 10 films each year.
Apart from being an accomplished actor Manna was also a successful producer. He, as a producer, used to cast once-popular actors who left the movie industry.
Manna was also a film activist against vulgarity. When, he became the General Secretary of Bangladesh Film Actors’ Association, he contributed much to the movement against vulgarity in the Dhaka’s film industry. Manna received several prestigious awards including a National Award for Best Actor in 2005.
In memory of the late actor, today satellite channel Bangla Vision will air a special programme Shokal Belar Roddur, which will be aired at 11:05am in which Shelly Manna, widow of the actor, veteran filmmakers Chashi Nazrul Islam and actress Nipun will speak about Manna.
