A Dhaka court has sentenced a man to death for killing his mother in Dhaka 12 years ago.
Special District and Sessions Judge Begum Chaman Chowdhury passed the verdict on Sunday.
Convicted Mobarak, who killed his mother Honufa Begum, was present in the court to hear the verdict.
Honufa had served as a cleaner of Dhaka City Corporation and used to
live in Hazaribagh area. She was strangled after being tied with a piece of cloth around her neck. Her brother Abdur Rashid filed a case over the incident with Hazaribagh Police Station in 2007.
According to the case dossiers, Mobarak was jobless and used to torture her mother for money. He asked her mother to give him some money in 2007 and killed her when she refused to meet his demand.
Three days after the incident, police recovered Honufa’s body after being informed by the neighbours. Aided by his accomplices, Mobarak killed his mother, covered the body with clothes and pillows in her bed and locked the door from outside, according to the case filed by Rashid.
Faruk Bhuiyan, sub-inspector of Hazaribagh Police Station, pressed charges against him after the investigation. The court issued an order to begin trial in 2008.
Public Prosecutor Md Anwar Shahadat Shaon stood for the state while lawyer Kazi Salah Uddin Ahmed represented Mobarak during the hearing.
