A young man was beaten to death at Kuruskul in Sadar Upazila of the district on Sunday reportedly after his nephew harassed a girl.
The deceased was identified as Absar Kamal, 36, son of Shaheed Nur of Geillabaperpara under Kuruskul Union.
Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station Farid Uddin said Kamal’s nephew Belal Uddin harassed the sister-in-law of Kuruskul Union Parishad Chairman Jasim Mollah in the afternoon.
He also beat chairman’s nephew Mansur Ali as he protested the stalking.
Being informed about the incident, the chairman and his men stormed Belal’s house. However, he was not at the house.
Later, they swooped on Belal’s uncle Absar and beat him mercilessly. He was taken to hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Meanwhile, police arrested chairman Jasim over the incident.
