Madhumati River erosion takes serious turn at Chitalmari point

Erosion of the river Madhumati has once again taken a serious turn in Chitalmari Upazila in Bagerhat district recently.
Following the serious turn . dwelling houses, shops, gardens of fruit bearing trees and crop lands adjacent to the river are being devoured by the river Madhumati regularly.
The people of the localities strongly urged the Govt . to construct a durable embankment there immediately in order to protect the areas from the erosion of the mighty river Madhumati.
On Tuesday when a number of newsmen visited the erosion affected areas the local people disclosed to them, the erosion of the river Madhumati that passes by the sides of Barabaria and Kalatala union Parishads of Chitalmari Upazila in Bagerhat district) has aggravated very recently. Due to the erosion over 500 families of the union Parishads became destitute. Most of the affected villagers after losing their paternal homesteads took shelter in the houses of others or in the temporary houses constructed on their own lands or Khas lands or lands belonging to others.
On the other hand, a number of affected people after losing everything overnight due to the river-erosion were thrown into utter distress. The people who are now living in their houses, adjacent to the river are in great anxieties as their houses may be eroded at any time by the mighty river. The affected people were given assurance on be half of Chitalmari Upazila administration that all the necessary steps would be taken to protect the erosion. But no such step was taken from any quarter so far.
Shopkeepers like Shah Alam Shaikh, Shahadat Hossain, Rahaman Shaikh, Momrez Khan and Litu Khan of Shyaldha bazar within Kalatala Union told the newsmen in disappointed tones, if the erosion of the river Madhumati continues in such an uninterrupted way their dwelling houses, shops and other establishments, adjacent to the river cannot be protected at all from the erosion. They added, about 20/25 shops including the office of the Bazar Committee, a good number of dwelling houses and other establishments of the Bazar were eroded by the river during the last few days. As a result, the affected people incurred a heavy loss of Taka more than one crore. Being informed of the matter high officials of Chitalmari Upazila administration, Shikdar Matiur Rahman, Chairman of Kalatala Union Parishad and some local political leaders visited the erosion affected areas and assured that they would take necessary steps to protect the areas from the erosion of the river Madhumati. The UP chairman disclosed, gunny bags loaded with sands are being placed on the affected places to protect the erosion on primary step. He added, if the permanent and durable step is not taken by the concerned authorities the erosion of village Shyaldha and Shyaldha bazar could not be protected from the erosion permanently. The shopkeepers of the bazar added, if such steps are not taken immediately by the Bangladesh Water Development Board Shyaldha bazar would be disappeared from its map very soon.
Md. Rukanuddin, Izaradar (lease holder) of Shyaldha bazar ferry ghat told the newsmen, if the erosion of the river Mahumati continues in such a way Shyaldha bazar cannot be protected from the erosion at all. He added, Shyaldha bazar ferry ghat is already affected by the erosion. Hundred of people cross Shyldha ferry ghat every day to go to Tungipara and Kotalipara Upazilas in Gopalganj district and Nazirpur Upazila in Pirojpur district (situated on the other side of the river Madhumati). People are to face various problems to cross the river Madhumati from the erosion affected Shyaldha bazar ferry ghat. But no measure was taken so far from any quarter for the protection of the ferry ghat.
Widow Sharifa Begum hails from erosion affected Barabaria Union Parishad under Chitalmari Upazila (in Bagerhat district) told the newsmen in a chocked voice, a vast tracts of lands comprising homesteads, crop lands, gardens of fruit bearing trees and valuable trees and a big grave yard where more than 50 people including my parents and fore-fathers were buried were devoured by the mighty river Madhumati during the last few years. The villagers who lost those properties are now living in a deplorable conciliation.
Abdul Hakim Molla, Ibrahim Molla, Ashraf Ali Shaikh, Taib Ali Shaikh, Zafar Fakir, Harun Fakir, Ayub Ali, Titu Khalifa and many others of the erosion affected village Paranpur village within Barabaria Union Parishad told the newsmen, every year our dwelling houses, crop lands, gardens of coconuts and betel-nut trees and other establishments are eroded by the river Madhumati every year during the rainy season. They added, we shifted our dwelling houses and other establishments were more than 40 times to save them from the erosion of the river. But in spite of that we could not save anything from the river-erosion.
 Only a few days ago the erosion of the river started once again. In this connection Masud Sardar, Chairman of Barabaria Union Parishad told the newsmen, during the last few years homesteads, croplands and garden of valuable trees of more than 500 people of the village Paranpur were engulfed by the mighty river Madhumati and at present they completely became destitute. The erosion affected people strongly urged the concerned authorities to take necessary and effective measures to check the erosion of the river Madhuimati.
Bagerhat Town inundated
 
Rain water that inundated many places of Bagerhat district town like Puratan bazar, Pouirashava Road, Sadhanar Mor, Nagerbazar, Basabati, Khardar, Harikhali, Gobordia etc. areas on Thursday, Friday and Saturday accompanied with gusty wind and tidal surge of the sea has not yet receded as the drainage system of the Poursahava is not modernized. The inclement weather paralyzed the normal life of the people of the district town and of the rural areas (of the district) during the period from Thursday to Saturday.
 Due to the inclement weather the day labourers were thrown out of jobs. Following this inclement weather prices of vegetables, fish and some other essentials commodities have registered high in the local markets once again
