Customs intelligence officials on Tuesday seized in Chittagong city’s Chatteswary area a luxury Mini Cooper car, worth around Tk 80 lakh, brought into the country dodging tax.
Owner of the car, Golam Sarwar, a businessman, could not show any necessary document regarding importing the car into the country. The car is neither registered with Bangladesh Road Transport Authority. He was served with a notice to submit written statement mentioning all the necessary details. Deputy Director of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate SM Shamimur Rahman suspect that the car was imported under the now-defunct Carnet de Passage system which allowed travelers/ tourists to move through countries driving their own vehicles on temporary importation facilities without payment of any duty and taxes.
