Livestock Service week begins today

The Department of Livestock Services (DLS) is all set to observe the Livestock Service Week-2017 for the first time across the country from tomorrow to help ensure safe animal protein for people.
“The Livestock Service Week is being observed throughout the country from February 23-27for involving more people with the sector as the sector is playing vital role in socio-economic development of the country,” said Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Sayedul Haq while addressing a press briefing on the eve of the day at ministry conference room here this morning.
To mark the week, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock (MoFL) and the Department of Livestock Services have chalked out different programmes centrally in the capital and district and upazila levels across the country.
The main slogan of the week is -“promise to safe animal protein, for healthy strong genius nation (Nirapad Pranij Amisher Protisruti, Susthya Saval Medabhi Jati)”.
Under the programme, colorful rally, seminar, livestock fair, projeni or developed livestock variety display at Keraniganj, livestock related essay competition and selection of best livestock entrepreneurs and prize distribution will be held at centrally in the capital.
Besides this, different sorts of programmes including discussion, livestock affairs services, school feeding like egg and milk, livestock related fair and poster and leaflets distribution also will be held at district and upazila level across the country.
Although country’s animal protein like milk, meat and egg production has significantly risen for the last couple of years, said the minister, adding but the country has 74.16 lakh tonnes shortage of milk, 9 lakh tonnes meat and 483.16 crore pieces of eggs against the demand of 146.91 lakh tonnes milk, 70.52 lakh tonnes meat and 1674.40 crore pieces of eggs respectively.
Referring to supply of adequate sacrificial animals in the last year, the livestock minister explained that “Country’s total sacrificial animals demand in the year of 2016 was met with the indigenous livestock.”
Even the total investment for the poultry sector, country’s 2nd largest economic sector after the Readymade Garments (RMG), is nearly Taka 25,000 crore and nearly 70 lakh people are involved in the sector.
Haq said the government has earmarked Taka 200 crore loan facility for dairy farmers in 2015-16 fiscal, adding that Taka 67 crore were disbursed with 5 per cent interest rate.
Ministry high officials including Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Masudul Hasan Khan, Director-General (DG) of DLS Dr Ainul Haq, among others, were present in the press briefing.
