Lightning strikes kill 3 in Dhaka city

Three people, including two minor girls, were killed after a lighting strike in the Bangladesh capital’s Malibagh area on Saturday afternoon.
Victims’ details could not be known immediately.
Hatirjheel police sub-inspector Shariful Islam said that an electric transformer exploded in a lightning strike near Abul Hotel at Malibagh in Dhaka at about 2:15pm while it was raining in the area.
The transformer exploded and electrocuted the adjacent three-storied building there, leaving an elderly security guard and two minor girls electrocuted.
Informed by locals, the local power office switched off power connections in the area and the three were rescued, said the police officer.
They were sent to hospitals, but doctors declared them dead.
Of the girls, one was 15-year old and the other was 10-year old while the other victim is sexagenarian male, said Hatirjheel police officer-in-charge Abdur Rashid.
The bodies were kept in Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for post mortem examinations, he said.
