Chairman of Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority(BEZA) emphasised the need for growing up a leather village in the port for accelerating the development of tannery industry in the country . Chairman of BEZA Mr. Paban chowdhury expressed his opinion while addressing the views exchanging meeting held between Chittagong chamber of commerce authority and the Tannery Industrial entrepreneurs at Chittagong circuit house on Sunday as chief guest .
The BEZA chairman urged the concerned authorities to formulate policy for establishment of a leather village in Chittagong very shortly for rapid flourish of the industry. The speakers in the meeting stressed for building a zone for leather industry in chittagong to survive the tannery industry in Chittagong.
The chief guest in his deliberations hoped for a leather village in port city very shortly . President of Chittagong chamber of commerce Md. Mahbubul Alam said government has undertaken for building 100 Economic zone across the country of which 30 zones earmarked in greater Chittagong. He said out of the total procurement of raw leather across the country, about 40% comes from Chittagong zone and hence immediate development of tannery industry in this zone is very much essential .
The previous tannery industries of Chittagong now in ruined conditions and only two tanneries are functioning, CCCI sources said. Chamber chief urged upon the authorities to allocate an specific areas for leather village Alluminium industry in the port city immediately. Among others, chamber director Mahfuzul Hoque Shah, Ahid Siraj Chowdhury and Anjan Sekhor Das, Additional Deputy Commissioner Md. Doulatuzzaman Khan, and the leaders of the Footwear and leather industry owners association spoke on the occasion, a CCCI release said.
