Law to ensure food security stressed

Speakers at a seminar on Wednesday demanded that the government take immediate steps to enact a food security act to ensure food security for all.
They also demanded slashing the prices of rice, providing safe food, cash money and agricultural ingredients to the victims of recent floods that hit the country’s haor areas and northern region, and easy loan to farmers.
Right to Food Bangladesh in association with World Vision and European Union organised the national seminar titled ‘Food security after flood and natural disaster and right to food’ at the Cirdap auditorium in the city.
Mentioning that the process of preparing the daft of the Food Security Act is underway, Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu said people’s two rights-right to food and right to internet-are yet to be guaranteed by a law.
Chairman of Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) and Right to Food Bangladesh Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad said people will be able to claim their rights to the state if there is a law in this regard.
Mentioning that natural disaster can strike anytime because of the climate change impacts, he said the government will have to remain careful to this end.
PKSF Chairman said the government will have to come out of self-complacency that the country has achieved food autarky taking lesson from the recent flood, and take proper steps to tackle upcoming natural calamities.
He also urged the authorities concerned to be aware about the nutrition value of food.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Food Ministry Abdul Wadud said the rice prices are decreasing for the government’s intervention.
Noting that it is not easy to formulate a law on an issue, he said the government is working on this issue.
Former Director General of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies Qazi Shahabuddin, Right to Food Bangladesh General Secretary and also Wave Foundation Executive Director Mohsin Ali, and World Vision Bangladesh Management Coordinator M Kamruzzaman, among others, spoke at the programme with Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad in the chair.
