Land grabbing by Minister betrays ruling party politics

NEWS reports said a powerful Minister of the government and three ruling party lawmakers have grabbed valuable land or attempted to grab the land at four districts belonging to the minority community. Awami League lawmaker and presidium member Suranjit Sen Gupta has meanwhile urged the Prime Minister to take necessary steps over the allegation to protect the property of the minority community. Suranjit’s move came following the accusation made by the Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Oikya Parishad, blaming LGRD Minister Khondker Mosharraf Hossain and three others for land grabbing. The Minister has reportedly grabbed a Zaminder’s palace at Faridpur. The ruling party lawmaker Dabirul Islam of Thakurgaon-2 has grabbed Hindu land in his constituency. Lawmaker AKMA Awal of Pirojpur-1 made attempts to grab a shop at Shwarupkathi and Whip Mahbub Ara Gini attempted to grab land and fell trees of Gaibandha Ramkrishna Temple. The news indeed landed as a big shock to the nation. The ruling party Awami League; which claims to be secular and protecting the minority came under direct accusation of land grabbing of the minorities by its senior leaders. Needless to say, Awami League always blame people opposed to it like BNP and the Islamists for land grabbing of the Hindu community. This is however not entirely corroborated by facts and the breaking of the latest news again showed that it is rather the ruling party bigwigs engaging in such grabbing while misleading the people at home and abroad on the issue. Officials of the Association for Land Reforms and Development said they have also received similar allegations and some were already investigated and found to be true.It is not easy to publish criminal activities against a Minister. But some newspapers have done and government has not yet taken any action against the press. We appreciate this. After such allegations, made publicly it would be a good example for the government to stand against corruption.
