UNB, Dhaka :
Over an hour after Khaleda had been admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), a medical board on Monday started providing Khaleda with necessary treatment for her various ailments, including severe pain in the joints of her hands and legs.
“Khaleda Zia has been admitted to BSMMU’s 621-no room (at Cabin Block) around 12:45 pm.
We along with a five-member medical board visited her at the cabin around 2 pm,” said BSMMU director Brig Gen AK Mahbubul Hoque.
Talking to reporters at the hospital, he said the medical board carefully heard from Khaleda Zia about her physical problems. “After analysing her health problems, the medical board has given her a prescription, and she’ll take medicines from today as per the prescription.”
The BSMMU director said Khaleda has been suffering from serious pain in the joints of her hands and legs. “She is also very week as she can’t take food and sleep well. Her sugar level is also high.”
Mahbubul Hoque, however, said it apparently looks Khaleda is not suffering from any critical disease.
He also claimed that the BNP chairperson spontaneously talked to the medical board members about her physical problems as she has confidence in them. “She also received their prescription gladly. I think she is happy with the medical board.”
The BSMMU director also said Khaleda’s health condition is now stable.
Asked whether there is any necessity for her medical test now, he said some tests were conducted earlier when she was in jail. “The board did not suggest any fresh test.”
Mahbubul Hoque said apart from 621 No room, the room No 622 was also allocated for jail officials to ensure the BNP chief’s security.
He said the medical board which had been formed earlier was reconstituted four days back as its chairman and medicine department’s Prof Dr Abdul Jalil Chowdhury went on retirement. Chairman of internal medicine department Prof Zilan Miah Sarker has been made chairman of the five-member medical board.
The other board members are Prof Syed Atqiul Haq of rheumatology department, Associate Prof Dr Tanjima Parvin of cardiology department, Associate Prof Dr Badrunnesa Ahmad of the physical medicine and rehabilitation department and Assistant Prof Choudhury Iqbal Mahmud of orthopedic department. Besides, Associate Prof Shamim Ahmed of rheumatology department and Khaleda Zia’s personal physician Dr Mamun will assist the medical board.
The BSMMU director said a doctor will check Khaleda’s health condition every day to assess whether it is improving or not.
Asked whether there is any necessity to send Khaleda to any other hospital or abroad, he said she is not suffering from such a critical disease which treatment is not possible at BSMMU.
Replying to another question, Mahbubul Hoque said Khaleda may be taken back to jail if her health condition improves promptly. “But if she feels comfortable to stay here for a few days, we have no objection.”
