Doctors of Square Hospitals in Dhaka yesterday expressed high hope about the recovery of brutally hacked Sylhet Women’s College student Khadiza Begum Nargis by a BCL leader.

“The recovery chance of Khadiza has increased. She could move her right hand and right leg and respond with the right eye slightly,” said Dr AM Rezaul Sattar, associate consultant of the Neurology Department of the hospital.

He expressed the hope while talking to reporters at the hospital premises on Saturday noon.

“Khadiza is still not out of danger. We cannot predict much of her recovery at this stage. However, the condition is better,” said Mirza Nazim Uddin, consultant of the hospital’s Medicine and Critical Care Unit.

Khadiza, a second year Bachelor’s student of Sylhet Govt Mohila College, was brutally chopped by Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) unit BCL leader Badrul Alam on October 3 when she was returning home from her college after appearing for an examination.

Badrul, a fourth-year student of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) and also senior assistant secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) unit at SUST.

At first, Khadiza was rushed to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital and then to the Square Hospital early Tuesday, as her condition deteriorated.

She is still on life support at the hospital.

Dr AM Rejaul Sattar said, “It is a major matter that she is still surviving 96 hours after she was admitted to the hospital.” “Thus the recovery chance increases with time,” he said. She can open her eyes and respond, the doctor said after examining her condition. “It can take two-three weeks or even months for her recovery from present condition,” he added. Khadiza is now undergoing treatment at the Neuro Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.
