UNB, Dhaka :
Despite the state objection, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Monday fixed April 1 for hearing of condemned war criminal M Kamaruzzaman’s review petition.
After briefly hearing both sides, a four-member Appellate Division Bench, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, fixed the date,
allowing the defence adjournment prayer on grounds of homework over the review hearing. Attorney General Mahbubey Alam opposed the adjournment plea.
Kamaruzzaman filed a petition on March 5 seeking review of the Appellate Division judgment upholding the death sentence awarded by the trial court for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
Later, the condemned convict filed a supplementary petition seeking a four-week adjournment on the review hearing.
On May 9, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal-2 condemned Jamaat-e-Islami assistant secretary general M Kamaruzzaman, a 1971 operator of infamous Al Badr vigilante outfit, to death for his crimes against humanity, including murder, abduction, torture, rape and mass killing, during the Liberation War in 1971 against Pakistan junta.
On November 3 last year, the Appellate Division upheld the tribunal’s death sentence by a short order and released its full text of the judgment on February 18, and according to the prescribed rules the review petition was filed. As a result, Kamaruzzaman’s death warrant issued by the tribunal remains inoperative.
