A total of 1,330 packages of relief materials donated by Jatiya Samaj Kallyan Parishad (JSKP) under the Ministry of Social Welfare were distributed among the flood victims of three upazilas in the district on Thursday.
Official sources said due to the on rush of hilly waters from the upstream and incessant rain, the flood like situation created in the chars and Brahmapurtra river basin of Sundarganj, Sadar and Fulchhari upazilas.
Due to the flood, over 9,000 families of the upazilas were marooned and their sufferings knew no bounds. Many of them took shelter on the nearby embankment of Bangladesh Water Development Board with their domestic animals and poultry birds and were passing their days miserably for want of food.
To mitigate the sufferings of the flood affected people of the upazilas, the JSKP stood beside the flood victims and distributed packages of relief materials as part of its social corporate responsibility.
Of the total, some 600 packages were distributed among the victims in Sundarganj upazila, 500 in Fulchhari upazila and 230 in Sadar upazila, said acting district relief and rehabilitation officer and assistant commissioner Nazmul Huda.
Each package contained 5-kg of rice, two-kg of potato, and a kg of pulse, soybean oil and iodized salt, he added.
