Shwapnil Ahmed Piash, 24, son of senior journalist Moazzem Hossain Nannu, died in an Air Conditioner (AC) blast at his residence in the city’s Aftabnagar area early Thursday.
The deceased was sleeping in his room when the incident occurred around 5:00am, police said.
Moazzem Hossain, former General Secretary of Crime Reporters’ Association of Bangladesh (CRAB), and his wife also fell sick for smoke inhalation during the fire, hospital sources said.
The trio were brought to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH)
where the on-duty doctor pronounced Piash dead, hospital sources said.
Local sources said, Piash, a student of a private university, suffered severe burn injuries in an AC explosion at his flat on the top floor of a 10-storey building in Aftab Nagar at night.
Six fire fighting units from Tejgaon, Khilgaon and Baridhara rushed to the spot and brought the fire, which broke out on the top-floor apartment of the ten-storey building, under control, said Duty Officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence Russel Sikder.
