JnU 3 departments trapped in session jam

Students of three departments of Jagannath University (JnU) namely Fine Arts, Film & Television, and Theatre Department have been facing serious session jam lingering by 20 to 22 months.
Students of the departments are in deep frustration for the lengthy sessions, although the university authorities many times promised they are taking steps to reduce the menace but no effective progress. Besides, students trapped by the jam will lag behind the job market by no less than one to two years.
Many students have been expressing disappointment as they can not apply for existing good jobs. The students blamed the teachers’ negligence in academic activities, internal conflicts among teachers and shortage of classroom.
Film & Television department is facing the worst session jam, according to the university source the department lunched it academic activities from 2015-16 session. Students of 2015-16 and 2016-17 sessions are pursuing their class delayed by nearly one year. The students of 2017-18 session continuing their 4th semester lingering about 6 months. Besides, the students of 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2018-19 sessions started their next semester classes before facing previous semester viva examinations.
Students of the department alleged the department chairman is irregular in academic activities, most of the time teachers of the department don’t take classes over tripling matter.
While contacted Film and Television department chairman Prof Junaid Ahmed Halim said “We have been facing classroom crisis since the establishment of the department that is why the department facing session jam, besides other teachers don’t understand departmental everything thoroughly so I always have to see everything and we are trying to curb session jam”.
While asked about his irregular in the department activities, the chairman denied the allegations and said he was sick some days and had to take rest in home.
“External teachers had not much time for taking viva examinations. The were not available, if they have time we would arrange viva examinations” the chairman replied about the starting next semester before previous semester viva examinations.
The university Theatre department also is facing gruesome session jam. This newly established department has teachers and staffs crisis, besides new teachers not being much skilled in administrative and academic activities the academic life of the students go on smoothly.
The students of 2013-14session just completed their undergraduate final semester examinations while they were scheduled to pass out before 2018 and delayed by two years but result yet to be published. Students of 2014-15 are running for seven semester lingering 19 months and 2015-16 session students continuing 6thsemester lingering 15 months. Students of 2016-17 session are also 9 months delayed. Students of 2017-18 session just completed 4th semester following 7 months session jam. Six-month long semester is being completed by 9 months. Students of 2018-19 session completed first semester in 11 months.
Theatre department chairman Md. Kamal Uddin said they had talk to the Vice-chancellor, within next month they would reduce session jam by taking examinations.
Students of the department alleged after completing credit classes, exams date is not being declared. Students were obstructed by the department authorities several times when they were ready to file written complaints to the university VC on the regard. Besides, for classroom crisis, students used to wait outside for the ending other batches’ classes.
The university Fine Arts department lunched it academic activities in 2014 but just one batch passed out of graduation. Students of 2014-15 session continuing 8thsemester and 2015-16 session in 7th semester while both batches’ students of other department already completed graduation. Students of 2016-17 session are continuing 6th semester lingering 7 months. Students of 2017-18 session also are two months lingered, they yet to get 3rd and 4thsemesters result. While students of other department of 2018-19 session already started 3rd semester then students of the batch couldn’t complete 2nd semester final examinations.
“Steps have been taken to arrange additional classes and hold examinations through integrated routine to overcome the session jam problem,” said Fine Arts department chairman Dr Bazlur Rashid Khan.
