Udichi and Charukola in Barisal have said they received a letter from so-called Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) which told them to back off from Pahela Baishakh preparations.
“The letter says the JMB activists are ready in Barisal and other parts of the county to carry out bomb attacks,” said Barisal Charukola member Shushant Ghosh who filed a general diary at Kotwali Model Police Station in the afternoon.
The banned extremist outfit has threatened to blow up the headquarters of Udichi and Charukola in Barisal if their ‘order’ was not followed, said Sushant.
It has also created a list of prominent cultural activists in the town who they plan to kill soon, according to the letter found at the office of BTV’s Barisal correspondent on Tuesday.
The cover of the letter carries names of two receivers – Subhash Chandra Das Nitai and Bishwanath Das Munshi.
Subhash is from Barisal Institute of Fine Arts, known as Charukola, while Bishwanath is the president of Barisal Udichi, a prominent cultural entity in the country.
JMB has warned the two organisations to refrain from taking out the iconic procession ‘Mangal Shobhajatra’ and halt all preparations to celebrate the first day of Bangla New Year slated on Apr 14.
Assistant Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman has asked people to stay calm assuring that police personnel would be on alert across the town during the Pahela Baishakh celebrations. He assured of starting an inquiry into the so-called JMB threat.
