Jamaat-e-Islami has called a 24-hour countrywide hartal for Sunday protesting the Supreme Court order upholding its ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami’s death penalty. In a jointly statement, Jamaat acting ameer Makbul Ahmad and acting secretary general Dr Shafiqur Rahman announced the strike soon after the Supreme Court order on Thursday. The party also announced to hold a Doa Mahfil for Nizami on Friday and a peaceful programme for Saturday protesting the SC verdict. Earlier, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court rejected death-row war crimes convict Nizami’s review petition against its previous verdict in favour of his death penalty that was earlier awarded by the International Crimes Tribunal. — Dhaka, May 5 (UNB)
