Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu on Tuesday said the Information Ministry cannot take any administrative step based on the recently-formed National Broadcast Policy 2014.
Addressing a roundtable discussion, titled ‘Broadcasting Policy:
Challenges and Way Forward’, jointly organised by Dhaka Tribune and Bangladesh Copyright and IP Forum at a city hotel,
the minister also noted that the policy is a step towards shifting the regulatory power from the ministry to the National Broadcast Commission to be constituted soon.
Inu said the policy will serve as a guideline and the minor confusions already detected in it can be resolved before enacting the law in this connection. “All the stakeholders will be consulted when the government will prepare the law,” he added.
The Information Minister mentioned that the policy has been framed in line with the constitution of the country and in the style of similar policies in developed counties.
He said, a law on broadcasting is required to ensure protection of citizens from lies and misinformation.
The roundtable discussion was addressed, among others, by Prof AJM Safiul Alam Bhuiyan of Dhaka University Television and Film Studies Department, executive editor of Dhaka Tribune Shahriar Karim, 71 TV chief executive Samia Jaman and president of Bangladesh Federal Journalists Union Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul.
