Interplast to help BD set up plastic surgery instt

The Interplast that provides free plastic surgeries in developing countries has assured Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina of its all-out assistance in setting up a separate burn and plastic surgery institute in Dhaka along with burn units in Bangladesh’s big hospitals.
The assurance came when a nine-member delegation of Germany, the Netherlands and Hungary chapters of the Interplast met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganabhaban on Sunday evening.
After the meeting, Prime Minister’s Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhuri briefed reporters.
He said leading Surgeon on Plastic, Burn and Hand- Surgery at BGU Hospital of Duisburg in Germany Prof Dr Heinz-Herbert Homann led the delegation.
Prof Dr Habibe Millat MP, Honorary Adviser of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, DMCH Dr Samanta Lal Sen, President and Founder Member of ‘For Bangladesh Association- Germany’ Engineer Hasanat Mia, Prof Head of NIBPS Dr Abul Kalam and Director of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) Brigadier General Mizanur Rahman were present.
Dr Homann said Bangladesh is a big country in terms of population and a separate burn institute could be established in the country.
He highly praised Bangladesh’s health sector development under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s leadership.
The delegation leader also appreciated the activities in the burn unit of the DMCH and said it is the largest burn unit in the world.
When the Prime Minister raised the issue of burning more than 150 poor and common people to death by arson attacks, the delegation leader said killing people in this way is very much inhuman.
In this connection, he mentioned that the newly appointed German Ambassador in Dhaka broke into tears while visiting the burn injury patients, who became victims of the BNP-Jamaat arson attacks at the DMCH burn unit this morning.
Dr Homann laid emphasis on exchanging programmes between the Interplast and Medical Institutions in Bangladesh.
While talking about advanced training on burn and plastic surgery, the Prime Minister and the leader of the delegation agreed that here could be exchange of programmes in such field among Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands and Bangladesh.
At the meeting, the Prime Minister highlighted the government’s steps for the development of health sector of the country and said the government has already set up a medical university.
She said her government initially would set up two more medical universities and has a plan to establish a medical university in all divisional cities in phases to ensure higher medical education.
Prof Samanta Lal Sen informed the Prime Minister that the Interplast delegation comprising burn and plastic surgeons conducted surgeries upon 44 burn victims, including three critical ‘Free-Flap Surgeries’ at the DMCH burn unit since April 4.
