Tourism as a thrust sector required integrated information management to be developed as a sustainable industry in the country, stressed tourism experts.
Bangladesh Tourism Board (BTB) is disclosing information on its portal up to the year 2010 which has not been updated for long for public use; now for information on the sector external sources only are shedding light.
Experts and the ministry have stressed need for development of a separate organisation for record keeping of inbound and outbound tourists, the consumer behaviour of the tourists and their preferred choices for future use by the industry stakeholders and thus develop the sector to satisfy consumers’ needs.
According to the experts and industry insiders, keeping information internally is essential to meet the development necessities. Government has taken different infrastructural projects to satisfy tourism needs and now it is high time to take initiatives to attract more international customers and sell our tourism products and services and gain economic boosts.
Marketing, content development, prompting service offers, and product developments for tourism require the trends of such information of which Bangladesh is lagging behind. It is very essential for proper development of the sector to keep arrival, departure, expense and other consumers’ statistics for making the international tourists repeat the visit and thus help grow the tourism sector adequately.
Professor Dr Rashidul Hasan of Dhaka University Tourism Department had emphasised on developing a centralized database on tourism which will keep all the information of tourists who are visiting the country and keep those records for future use.
Besides developing international standard facilities at all the tourist spots of Bangladesh we need to address the information database for development of the sector. The sector has needs to provide guidelines to the economic councilors and visa officers of the foreign missions of Bangladesh so that they can encourage foreign tourists to visit Bangladesh which can establish tourism offices in the tourist generating countries like China, Malaysia, the UK, the USA, Japan, Australia, because these countries produce more than 70 per cent of the world’s outbound tourists.
