Bangladesh will receive 100MW more electricity from India by January as part of energy cooperation between the two neighbouring countries, official sources said.
They said, the power will be transmitted from Indian State of Tripura.
The decision was taken at a three-day (October 26-28) meeting between the Bangladesh and Indian officials held in New Delhi.
India’s power ministry’s director (Transmission) Ghanshyam Prasad led the Indian delegation while senior officials of Bangladesh power ministry and Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) were present in the meeting.
“The 100MW electricity will be in addition to the 500MW that Bangladesh already receives from the West Bengal. India will also provide 500MW more electricity to Bangladesh from the State,”
a senior Power Ministry official told The New Nation on Saturday. He said, the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) will erect the 47 km transmission line from western Tripura to southern Comilla to transmit the 100MW power.
Erection of the transmission will be completed by December this year, he said. The PGCIL would invest Rs.250crore to set up the double circuit (400kv) transmission line and Bangladesh government would reimburse the cost.
According to the official, of the 47km transmission line, 18km would be erected in the Indian (Tripura) territory and remaining in Bangladesh.
A total of 143 transmission towers would be set up in both sides of Bangladeshi and Indian territories.
When asked, the official said, “We have discussed about the power tariff at the meeting, but it is yet to be fixed. We will fix the tariff as soon as possible.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the power supply from Tripura with his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina during Dhaka visit in last June. He had declared that India would enhance the supply of power to Bangladesh from the existing 500 MW to 1,100 MW.
India had begun supplying 500MW of power to Bangladesh in 2013 after the Bangladesh Power Development Board and India’s NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd (NVVN), a subsidiary of NTPC, signed a deal on February 28, 2012, following an agreement signed during Hasina’s visit to New Delhi in January 2010.
