IGP gets conditional US visa to attend UNCOPS 2022

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has been given US visa to attend the United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2022) to be held at the United Nations in New York.
A senior official of the Police Headquarters confirmed the matter to The New Nation on Thursday.

The conditions are IGP Benazir Ahmed will not go outside New York during his visit to the UN, and his activities will remain confined to New York. Besides, he will not attend any state, social, formal and informal functions except the UN Police Summit.
He was also informed that his visa would be revoked immediately if he violates any of the condition.
The New Nation could not independently verify the conditions imposed on the IGP by the US Embassy.
The Third United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit is going to take place at the United Nations headquarters from August 31 to September 1. A six-member delegation led by Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal will represent Bangladesh at the summit.
Apart from the home minister and IGP, other members of the delegation attending the summit are the home ministry’s Public Safety Division’s joint secretary Abu Hena Mostafa Zaman, private secretary (deputy secretary) to the minister Md Asaduzzaman, the Police Headquarters’ additional deputy inspector general (UN Affairs) Nassian Wazed and IGP’s staff officer assistant inspector general Muhammad Masud Alam. They have already received the US visas for their visit to the UN, it is learnt.
The United States on December 10, 2021, sanctioned IGP Benazir Ahmed and six other former and serving commanders in Rapid Action Battalion for their human rights violations.
IGP Benazir Ahmed has been given visa after Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal’s raised the issue with US Ambassador Peter Haas when the envoy called him on August 16 at his secretariat office in Dhaka.
The Third United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit is expected to discuss United Nations policing priorities in international peace and security processes, among other issues.
