Iceland has agreed to support Bangladesh in raising its capacity in deep sea fishing in the Bay of Bengal to boost fish production, said Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali.
He said Iceland has agreed to provide technical and other necessary supports to this end and to work together in marine resources management in the Bay of Bengal on joint partnership basis. The Foreign Minister said this on Sunday following his official visit to Iceland on September 6-7.
During his visit to the Nordic country, he had a bilateral meeting with his Iceland counterpart Lilja Alfreosdottir and visited Ocean Cluster House and Geothermal Plant in Iceland to gather experience on how Iceland benefits from using marine resources and solar energy as well. Mahmood Ali told his Iceland counterpart that Bangladesh could benefit immensely by using “efficiency and experience” of Iceland in deep sea fishing.
“Your country’s expertise would immensely help Bangladesh to turn its prospect into reality in Blue Economy through deep-sea fishing and value addition,” he added. In response, Ms. Lilja expressed her country’s eagerness to support Bangladesh in this regard saying Iceland is willing to work with Bangladesh in marine resources management in the Bay of Bengal through joint partnership.
The matter would be discussed elaborately during the upcoming visit of Iceland foreign minister to Bangladesh, Lilja said. In this connection, Ali elaborated that currently Bangladesh has capacity to fish up to 60 kilometres out of 664 kilometre-long Bangladesh territory in the Bay of Bengal.
