Although advanced technology like OTT like WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger etc. is now widely used in the country, it is common to exchange calls on ordinary phones through VoIP. As a result, despite the increase in the number of telephone calls coming and going from abroad, the country is being deprived of the desired revenue.
According to various newspaper reports, about 20 million minutes of international calls are coming to the country through legal channels. Of this, 6 million to 7 million minutes of calls are coming through the international gateway (IGW) of state-owned telecom company BTCL, and the rest is coming through the private IGW Operators Forum (IOF). On the other hand, about three and a half crore minutes of calls are still coming through illegal VoIP traders.
