Technology giant Huawei filed lawsuits against T-Mobile in the US and Samsung in China, the latest in a series of disputes over the Chinese phone maker’s 4G patents.
The suit against T-Mobile, filed on July 7, accuses the wireless carrier of using Huawei’s patented 4G technologies without a licensing agreement. The 14 patents include GPRS and security standards of Huawei that T-Mobile uses throughout its 4G data network in the US, says a press release on Monday.
Huawei sued Samsung in China over patents. The filing in a court in Guanzhou comes after two earlier suits filed in California and Shenzhen in May seeking compensation for the use of fourth-generation cellular communications technology.
Huawei’s tough stance on patent infringement is notable for a Chinese company. Recently Huawei has made significant advancement in Bangladesh, and the company is still aggressively expanding its smartphone market here.
Over the past 20-plus years, Huawei has remained focused on ICT infrastructure, steadily investing in R&D. In 2015 alone, Huawei invested 15% of its annual revenue – CNY59.6 billion (US$9.2 billion) – in research and development. Huawei’s total R&D investment over the past decade exceeds CNY240 billion (approximately US$37 billion).
