The 95th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was observed across the country on Tuesday with due respect and festivity.The day was also observed as National Children’s Day. The day was a public holiday. The ruling Awami League, its associated bodies, different socio-cultural and political organisations observed the day with various programmes.On March 17, 1920, Bangladesh’s architect was born in remote village Tungipara in Gopalganj district, then subdivision of Faridpur district. Throughout his life of leadership, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman prepared the people of present-day Bangladesh to fight against exploitation and repression, first against the British colonial power, and then the Pakistani rulers that finally culminated in independent Bangladesh through nine months of Liberation War in 1971.On the fateful night of August 15, 1975, the great leader of the land was assassinated along with most members of his family by an army cabal.President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid homage to the Father of the Nation by placing wreaths at his Mazar in Tungipara, Gopalganj, marking his 95th birth anniversary.Sheikh Hasina also attended a children’s gathering, discussion and cultural programme at Bangabandhu Mausoleum Complex and inaugurated a book fair there.Earlier, she placed wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi in the capital.Awami League will also organise a discussion at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre on March 18 at 3 pm where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will attend as the chief guest.
