The High Court (HC) on Sunday stayed the proceedings of three cases for six months filed against former MP Golam Maula Rony on charge of defamation.
The HC bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice Kazi Md. Ejarul Haque Akondo passed the order with a rule after hearing a writ petition filed by Golam Maula Rony
challenging the legality of those cases.
In the rule, the court ask the government to explain in four weeks as to why the cases filed against Golam Maula Rony should not be scrapped.
Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal took part in the hearing on behalf of Rony while Assistant Attorney General Jesmine Sultana stood for the State.
Earlier, on October 25 the HC granted anticipatory bail to Rony in these cases.
On September 30 a post-editorial was published in a Bengali newspaper written by Rony. Three defamation cases were filed in Dhaka, Rajshahi and Sylhet against him as the allegation raised that lawyers were insulted in his write-up.
Rony filed a writ petition challenging the legality of the cases on argument that more than one cases cannot go on in one incident.
