Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and India Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet at New York this month during the United Nation General Assembly (UNGA).
This would be the first meeting between Modi and Hasina after the BJP came to power in India after the Lok Sabha polls in May.
Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative at the
UN AKA Momen told bdnews24.com that the two leaders will meet on Sept 27.
“Narendra Modi is the sixth speaker while Sheikh Hasina is the eighth at the General Assembly on Sept 27. They will meet after their speeches are over,” said Momen.
Like before, Sheikh Hasina will attend a media briefing in New York, said the UN Bangladesh Mission’s First Secretary (press) Mamun-Or Rashid.
Hasina is set to arrive in New York on Sept 22 to attend the 69th UN General Assembly.
Our New Delhi Correspondent adds: Officials at the Indian Prime Minister’s office (PMO) say Narendra Modi is ‘keenly looking forward’ to this meeting with Hasina.
They say the two leaders will touch base on contentious bilateral issues and Modi will reiterate to Hasina his plans to get over the unfinished agenda of the Manmohan government-the land boundary agreement and the Teesta water sharing deal.
“Bangladesh occupies a key place in Modi’s neighbourhood policy. How, is what he will make clear to Hasina during the meeting,” said a top PMO official but he wished to remain anonymous.
