Harvesting of sweet potato released by Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) is progressing fast in the district amid much enthusiasm among the producers.
Official sources said around 380 bighas of land owned by 2,500 farmers of Sadar and Fulchhari upazilas in the district have been brought under orange fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) during the current season.
CIP Bangladesh in partnership with brac implemented the OFSP farming in the upazila under SUSTAIN project funded by UKAID in collaboration with department of agriculture extension (DAE) and BARI, sources said.
As per the suggestions of CIP Bangladesh and DAE officials, the selected farmers cultivated the variety on their land last year and 120 days after the vine transplantation the farmers are harvesting the crops this month. The growers have already started harvesting the OFSP amid much enthusiasm and are getting desired output against the crop with nominal cost. Fulu Rani, a beneficiary farmer of Dobarpathar area under Gidari union of Sadar upazila, said she had cultivated the OFSP on her five decimal of land and got 15 maunds of OFSP root from the land.
To expand the farming of the OFSP variety in the district, the CIP Bangladesh and brac organized five Field Days to inspire the farmers for the next season, said field coordinator of CIP Bangladesh Enamul Haque.
Earlier, deputy commissioner M. Abdus Samad formally inaugurated the harvesting of OFSP in Dobarphathar area under Gidari union of Sadar upazila on Tuesday as the chief guest.
Programme officer of CIP Bangladesh Ramzan Ali said about 50 percent harvesting of the OFSP had already been completed in the upazilas and the rest would be finished soon.
