Business Desk :
As the cyclonic storm “Yaas” approaching Bangladesh’s coast, the agricultural office has advised farmers to harvest all the paddy that has matured up to at least 80 per cent.
The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) came up with the advice on Monday as the impending cyclonic storm could affect the production of paddy, risking food security. The deep depression in the Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas has intensified and turned into Cyclone Yaas, the DAE said in an advisory quoting the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
Due to the impact of the cyclone, there was a possibility of a storm with light to heavy rainfall from May 25 to May 27 in 30 districts especially in Khulna, Bagerhat, Barishal and Rajshahi divisions, it said.
In such a situation, farmers have been advised to follow some agro-climatic advice to protect standing crops from cyclone damage alongside instruction of harvesting the paddy that has matured up to at least 80 per cent.
Other measures include piling up the crop and covering it with polythene sheet if the collected crop cannot be transported, collecting matured vegetables and fruits especially mango and litchi quickly, avoiding irrigation, using fertilizers and pesticides, and keeping cattle and poultry in a dry and safe place.
