UNB, Dhaka :
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said the government is working to develop a modern mass transport system, aiming to make the journeys of the country’s people easier, nicer and more comfortable.
The Prime Minister said this after inaugurating the construction works on the much-hyped first-ever metro rail service in the capital and the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) from Shahjalal International Airport to Gazipur.
Sheikh Hasina formally inaugurated the construction works on these two mega projects unveiling plaques digitally from the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) in the city.
Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project, official name of the metro rail scheme, stretches from Uttara to Motijheel. The MRT Line 6 metro rail service is expected to open half of its 20.10 kilometers by the end of 2019. Besides, Road Transport and Highways Division will implement the Greater Dhaka Sustainable Urban Transport Project (BRT, Gazipur-Airport) by December 2018 at an estimated cost of Tk 2039.85 crore.
After the inaugurations, she said this day would remain as a memorable one for the city dwellers.
Hasina said her government always believes that all the development works of Bangladesh will have to be sustainable and public service-oriented one. “We always think how we could make the travel of the country’s people easier, more comfortable and nicer,” Regarding the construction works of package 3 and 4 under the MRT Line 6, Hasina suggested the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges to stretch the line and station from Uttara north to Farmgate instead of Agargaon considering the facility of the commuters.
Sheikh Hasina said her government has been constructing flyovers and railway
overpasses to reduce traffic jam, while a number of roads and bridges have been constructed to enter and leave the capital while Dhaka elevated expressway is under construction. She said steps have been taken to develop circular roads, railways and waterways around Dhaka city which would help the city dwellers enjoy hassle-free travelling and reach their destinations faster at an affordable cost. “A feasibility study has been completed to this end and hopefully we’ll be able to start this work,” she added.
Describing the up-to-date strategic transport plan for developing a coordinated Mass Transport System in the capital, the Prime Minister said a feasibility study under the plan for the 28-km MRT Line-1 from airport to Kamalapur and Khilkhet to Purbachal Kanchan Bridge and 13-km long MRT Line 5 from Gabtali to Bhatara via Technical Mirpur Section-1, 10 and 14, Banani and Gulshan is progressing.
