Govt to invest $20b in energy sector in 5 years

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid Bipu Tuesday said the government will invest 20 billion US dollars for development of the energy sector in the next five years.
“Out of that 10 billion US dollars will come from the foreign investors,” he said at a seminar at Jatiya Press Club here.
At the same seminar, Prime Minister’s Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Adviser Dr. Towfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury added that in the last five years 5.2 billion US dollars were invested in the energy sector while projects worth 8.5 billion US dollar are going on for overall development of the sector.
Awami League sub-committee on publicity and publication organized the seminar titled “Alokito Bangladesh’.
Professor of department of applied physics, electronics and communication engineering of Dhaka University Dr. Subrata Kumar Aditya presented the keynote paper in the seminar.
The State minister said the biggest blunder of BNP-Jamaat regime regarding the energy sector was to open up Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in a massive scale.
“For that misuse, we are moving towards a deficit of gas. I think there should be a management in this regard. CNG should be kept open only for public transports,” he said.
Bipu said pre-paid gas meters will we introduced soon to reduce corruption and wastage. “Pre-paid meter has already been introduced in many areas to check wastage of electricity. Pre-paid gas meter will also be introduced soon,” he said.
The state minister said digitization is going on in his ministry to check corruption in the energy sector.
Presided over by Awami League publicity and Publication Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud, the seminar was also addressed, among others, by Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Tajul Islam and former VC of BUET Professor Dr Habibur Rahman.
