Water Resources Minister Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud Thursday said the government has undertaken different initiatives for beneficial management of water resources coping with climate change to ensure food security.
He was addressing as the chief guest a 4-day conference on climate change at Independent University of Bangladesh (IUB) in Bashundhara area here.
Water Resource and Climate Change Specialist Dr Ainun Nishat, Dr A Atik Rahman, IUB Vice-Chancellor Dr Omar Rahman and French Ambassador in Dhaka Sophie Aubert, among others, attended the function.
The minister said Bangladesh has to ensure getting financial assistance from the World Climate Change Fund as a country exposed to climate change.
He urged the international organizations and developed countries to come forward to ensure financial assistance for the countries vulnerable to climate change.
Anisul said the water supply and sanitation systems should be re-organised side by side with regular dredging of rivers to ensure navigability of the rivers to cope up with climate change.
“Illegal cutting of trees and emission of toxic smoke from brickfields should be prevented,” the minister said.
