Bangladesh government has said the report on the closure of learning centers in Rohingya camps as reported in a few international media is “fabricated” and “false” as no such kind of step has been taken.
“No learning center for Rohingya children have been closed down”, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Sunday.
However, it said only unauthorized “private” coaching or learning centers have been shut down in the Rohingya camps.
Some unauthorized “private” home-based schools, coaching centres, and madrasas run by Rohingyas are conducting private coaching activities in the camps without approval of the government of Bangladesh following their separate curriculums and ultimate motives, the statement said.
Moreover, following the guidance of the government of Bangladesh, NGOs and INGOs are providing informal learning to FDMN (Rohingya) children through around 3,000 “learning centres” in the camps.
Recently, informal learning using Myanmar curriculum and Myanmar language has been rolled out in the camps to improve their productivity, uphold their tradition and cultural values leading to their reintegration in Myanmar upon repatriation, the statement added.
These types of private and home based learning centers do not ensure equity among FDMN children as those unauthorized activities were asked to stop, the statement also said.
Besides, the Foreign Ministry said due to those learning centres’ activities, the main learning centers are becoming unutilized, which is hampering the learning activities among FDMN learners in a common standard. In that context, those unauthorized activities were asked to stop.
The authorized learning centres are in operation following the government’s guidance. Neither the Unicef nor the UNHCR ever raised any concern for closing the unauthorized centers, the statement further added.
