Social Welfare Minister Syed Mohsin Ali told parliament that the government has so far enrolled 16,47,005 people as disabled persons under its Disability Identification Survey Programme since June in 2013. Replying to a question from ruling party lawmaker M Abdul Latif on Tuesday, the minister also said among the listed persons doctors detected disability of 7,47,896 persons.
He said the present government is committed to protecting the right of disabled people.
The government has already established 68 centers in 64 districts for providing services and helps to the disabled population. Each of the centers has an ‘Autism Corner’, he added. Mohsin Ali said various types of schools have been established at different places of the country under public and private initiatives for the disabled persons. The government has also formulated the Integrated Special Education Policy 2009 for the disabled persons, he added.
He said the government also took an initiative to establish a sports complex for the disabled under the National Foundation for Development of the Disabled Persons (NFDDP). Besides, he said a project titled “Promotion of Services and Opportunity to the Disabled Persons in Bangladesh” is being implemented by the NFDDP for empowerment and rehabilitation of the disabled persons.
